THE REVIEW

Hypnotic Donuts deserves a bit of a background story: Founded in summer 2010, Hypnotic is the self-proclaimed home of “Dallas’ original craft donut shop.” Everything from the dough to the icing is made in house by hand and using quality ingredients. If sweet treats aren’t your thing, they’re also home to “kinda world famous chicken biscuits.”

Hypnotic Donuts was created after co-owner James became frustrated with the same old look and taste to the local donut scene. Here’s a fun fact even we were surprised to hear: James discovered that out of 920 donut stores in the DFW area, about 90% of them were using the same supplier. The other 10% consisted of national chains (sorry Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme…Shipley Do-Nuts, you’re cool).

PROS:

We appreciated the quirky donut names, fun merchandise and “hyppie”/retro vibe. The Dallas shop is in an awesome location, too. Just a few minutes’ drive to the Dallas Arboretum and White Rock Lake.

When it comes to the donuts, there were almost too many delicious options to choose from! We limited our picks to an Old Fashion, “Homer” (yeast donut with chocolate icing and rainbow sprinkles), Blueberry Fritter, Jenny’s Evil Elvis (yeast donut with peanut butter, bacon, banana, and honey), and Breaking Bad (chocolate cake donut with salted caramel icing).

Hypnotic Donuts & Biscuit collageVegan donuts are hard to come by, so we gave the Cinnamon Sugar a try. We gotta say, this vegan donut was surprisingly fluffy and tasty:

And of course, we also had to try one of the biscuits. Amy’s Chicken Biscuit is cooked-to-order with bacon, pickles, honey, cheddar and southwestern spicy mustard. The honey and southwestern mustard made for a nice sweet and spicy combo.

…we’re not done yet…

Lucky for us, Hypnotic Emporium is right next door. The Emporium offers homemade ice cream, soda fountain, and candy served in a soda shop setting. We ordered an ice cream donut sandwich with Bee’s Knees and Blueberry Cheesecake flavors topped with whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles:

CONS:

As far as donuts go, our only complaint is that we didn’t try more. The Zooropa one with frosted animal crackers is on our radar.

Overall, we very much enjoyed Amy’s Biscuit, but the biscuit itself wasn’t as buttery or crispy as we prefer. The biscuit has a bit of denseness that makes it more bread-like instead.

As for the ice cream donut sandwich, the donut selection is sadly limited to plain/unglazed (for now).

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Kudos to James and his wife Amy for bringing the Voodoo Doughnuts concept to the DFW market. Great donuts, friendly staff, and unpretentious vibe at the Dallas Hypnotic shop. We stayed for an hour and it was popular all the way through close. We even noticed a Caviar delivery guy running a pick-up order (we see you lazy donut fans).

As of last week, several “we’re hiring!” signs were posted at Hypnotic Donuts and at Hypnotic Emporium. If you don’t want to work at a donut shop, at least check out their World’s Spiciest Donut Eating Contest on 8/28: First person to finish 5 Devils Death Dance Donuts (ghost pepper icing, fresh jalapenos, and habanero with Chinese chilis) wins. Registration required in advance.
