Okay, okay, so it’s been awhile since my last blog post… The neglect was partially due to a demanding work schedule the past year. But I’m also honoring the fact that these days, “readership” occurs more within social platforms like Instagram. Ultimately, I’m shifting away from this blog and keeping more content within Instagram and Facebook. I do plan on keeping blog reviews up-to-date as major donut shops open up.

But enough about me. Time to review the newest addition to the Plano donut scene, Wow! Donuts & Drips.

WOW! DONUTS & DRIPS REVIEW

Wow! Donuts opened in late December 2017 just in time for the holidays. Run by David Sim, a biochemistry major with a sweet tooth, Wow! promises artful donuts and lots of ’em.

It’s evident that a lot of thought went behind the aesthetic of the space. According to the website, “Most donuts and coffee shops forget that this is the place where family and friends (should) kick back and catch up over delicious eats, tasty drinks and pleasant conversation. That why we created just that. A relaxed, comfortable setting with [spacious seating] and an easy on the eyes go-to for our guests. WOW is perfect for casual events, private parties and more.”

Wow Donuts and Drips Interior Design

Open the front door and you’ll be overwhelmed with over 100 donut options displayed in glass cases, ranging from $1 to $5 apiece, plus cheese and jalapeño kolaches better known as Little and Big Pigs. The donut shop also takes pride in their coffees and teas, brewed using a custom machine called the Alpha Dominche Steampunk. The Steampunk is “highly-engineered to get rid of many of the variables that can cause impurities in your cup.”

PROS:

The interior design of the shop is not only adorable, it’s impeccably clean and bright with a retro nod. The friendly staff is ready and able to assist in your donut solution — a necessity with so many varieties to choose from. We ordered a blueberry fritter (crispy, but still delish), maple old fashioned, vanilla cake donut with buttercream pistachio icing, vanilla yeast donut with rainbow icing, vanilla yeast chocolate sprinkles, and a vanilla yeast donut with Oreo fixings.

The fritter was probably my favorite, followed by the vanilla cake and pistachio donut. I didn’t have the chance to order the Vanilla Raspberry Cheesecake, Strawberry Shortcake or the Grilled Banana and Nutella, but boy were they sure pretty to look at!

Equally as important, and unlike most donut shops in the DFW metroplex, Wow! is open in the evenings. That means I don’t have to rush from Fort Worth first thing in the morning.

CONS:

Some customers have complained of long wait times, over-fried fritters and over-priced donuts. While we didn’t wait for more than a few minutes for our fresh donuts, I do agree on the price points. Some of the donuts simply looked better than they tasted.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

The Wow! donut brand and design concept is spot on with meticulous detail to both interior design and donut decor. Give Wow! a few months to evolve past their growing pains and tighten up their “order to ready” time. You can tell the shop will serve as a welcome addition to the North Dallas community.

As for the donuts themselves, I’m wary of some of the super sugary icings and toppings, but I’d go back to try other flavors. I’ll also need to check out their extensive coffee/tea selection.

One final consideration: In my experience, shops that remain open all hours of the day (think Voodoo Doughnuts or Crunch Donut Factory) either don’t last long or suffer from product staleness. It takes a lot of staffing and fresh ingredients to keep a donut machine running 24/7. Can Wow! live up to the challenge?
