UPDATED AUGUST 2018:  Have you heard the news? Melvin Roberson, owner of  Dough Boy Donuts donut food truck, finally debuted his brick-and-mortar shop on Camp Bowie Blvd this month! Dough Boy Donuts took over Leah’s Sweet Treats’ former space, right across from Kincaid’s Hamburgers and close to Craftworks Coffee.

Wondering how the donuts taste these days? They haven’t changed a bit! That means the same made-from-scratch delicious donuts. According to Dough Boy Donuts, their ultimate goal is “to get them into your bellies as warm and fresh as possible.”

FYI Melvin and his Dad no longer park the truck at the Clearfork Food Truck Park on Friday evenings, the Clearfork Farmers Market Saturday mornings, and Rahr & Sons Brewery on Saturday afternoons. However, you can always rent the truck for private events like weddings, birthdays, and corporate functions.

DOUGH BOY DONUTS REVIEW

Dough Boy Donuts was first conceived during a late night dessert craving in 2015. Melvin searched for a local gourmet donut shop that was open at night, but ultimately came up empty. Melvin decided to solve his own problem by launching his own line of sweet treats. He started small, first purchasing a food truck from a mentor, next securing a permanent parking space outside of Kent & Co. Wines in Fort Worth, then launching a Kickstarter project in September 2015. Since then, he’s established a key following among Fort Worth residents.

Today, the donut brand is a true family affair. Melvin’s retired father, Melvin Sr.,  is always eager to play assistant chef and primary taste tester. A CBS interview captured the playful father-son dynamic perfectly:

“My dad drops a lot of the donuts moving them from the fryer to the screen and then he eats a lot of them too,” the younger Roberson said laughing.

Melvin Roberson Sr. fired back, “I’m trying to put on some LB’s. I need to get a little more size like by kid. So, I taste a lot.”

Both parents helped open up the brick-and-mortar shop this year.

PROS:

Dough Boy Donuts is still the only donut food truck in the metroplex, and the mobility says a lot about Dough Boy’s service. Melvin is flexible to the needs of his customers, shifting typical gigs around to accommodate private parties, festivals, weddings and even sporting events. Now, of course, there’s the brick-and-mortar shop for regular hours and location.

After living in Fort Worth for over 2 years, I’ve tried all of  Dough Boy’s OG menu and can attest to the high-quality of the dough, glazes, and unique toppings. S’mores, bacon, butter pecan? Check, check, check. Cereal donuts? Dough Boy’s got you covered.

While it’s hard to choose a favorite flavor, standouts include the CinnaBun, sriracha maple bacon, and the Last Call, a “kitchen sink” type concoction with peanut butter, Nutella, maple syrup glaze, pecans, coconut and crumbled Oreos. I also thoroughly enjoyed their former Halloween Blood Splatter special, vanilla butter glazed with raspberry purée splashes.

Quite possibly my favorite donut on the menu: Sriracha Maple Bacon

CONS:

Not much to harp on here! If I’m being picky, perhaps more decor as the furniture looks somewhat sparse.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Melvin brings a sense of scrappiness, creativity, hard work, and tenacity to the Dough Boy Donuts brand. We respect the startup mentality and the insistence on fresh, quality ingredients. I’m thrilled to see Melvin grow his donut empire with a permanent space in Fort Worth.
